Revised Race / Ethnic Estimates

State and county race/ethnicity estimates are presented in this report, along with components of population change. Included are the race/ethnicity totals from July 1970 to July 1990. Historic data are given for these race categories: White (non-Hispanic), Asian and Pacific Islander (non-Hispanic), Black (non-Hispanic), and Native American (non-Hispanic). A separate ethnic category is provided for Hispanics.

Methodology

Births, deaths, and school enrollment data were collected annually by race/ethnicity at the county level. These data were regressed by race/ethnic group to smooth fluctuations in the data series, then a ratio correlation procedure created the race/ethnic group estimates. The regressed data for births, deaths, and school enrollment were used to develop annual crude rates, which were smoothed between censuses. Estimates for race/ethnic groups were produced in this way each year for each data series: births, deaths, and enrollment. The ratios to the total for each race/ethnic group were averaged and the results applied to the county total populations to produce the race/ethnic estimates. The method used to derive the county controls can be found in the latest latest E-6 report.
