Comments on California’s Budget Calendars:

NOTE: These calendars are to help departments plan their budget work based on Budget Letters and the SAM Budgeting Chapter. They show the general dates that apply from year-to-year. For the specific dates that apply to a particular fiscal year, see the various DOF Budget Letters, especially the annual Budget Preparation Guidelines Budget Letter usually issued in mid-April.

General Budget Timetable.  This is the state’s general budget calendar. It begins in early January and includes approximately 60 different dates or action steps that are related to the Governor’s Budget development and which lead to the enactment of the Budget Act. It includes dates for the upcoming budget year as well as the fiscal year following the upcoming one. It does not reflect earlier actions that departments must take in preparing their budget proposals for submission to the Department of Finance, nor does it reflects budget administration dates and activities.

Simplified General Budget Timetable.  This is a shortened version of the General Budget Timetable. It only includes dates that are applicable to the fiscal year for which the budget is being prepared. The calendar begins in mid-April, nearly 15 months prior to the start of that fiscal year.
